Client Quote #35: reasons for recovery

It’s okay to not care. It’s not your fault that you find it hard to care about recovery.

Recovery isn’t fun or easy.

Recovery asks you uncomfortable questions and wants you to do really challenging things all the time.

Resisting recovery makes a ton of sense.

I notice people don’t usually go through recovery just to recover from their ED. They go through it because they care about other things like:

  • academic or athletic achievements

  • friendships and romantic relationships

  • career success

  • having and looking after their families

  • wanting to be themselves and reaching their potentials and dreams.

They do it because they care about other things that compete with the ED. You cannot keep your ED and actualize your dreams. They are unfortunately mutually exclusive. So you don’t really have to care about recovery for the sake of treating your ED. You just need to notice how much you also care about other things, the many other things that are far more important than controlling food and your body. This may take time, but that’s perfectly fine. We’ll take the time.
