Client Quote #30: measuring

What a great question and example of how diet culture fuels our anxiety around eating. This client could not eat any food unless he knew the exact amount of grams in protein and carbohydrate in his food. This anxiety robbed him of the experiences of being able to eat out with friends, and meal preparations took such a big part of his life he’s left with little room for any other passion or interests. But that’s often how nutrition recommendations are delivered- reducing food down to only its nutrients. We name food as their function (protein, carbs etc), and portions based on ultimately guesses of someone else’s needs. This is an illusion of control to manage anxiety, and unfortunately it won’t work forever…at least without great costs.
